Bone Grafting

Though you may only need local anesthesia, there are times when general anesthesia is used for bone grafts. An incision will need to be made so that your dentist can see the bone that needs the graft

What Is Bone Grafting?

When you have a bone graft, bone tissue will be transplanted to another area of your body where it is needed. There are two types:

  • Allograft. This uses bone from a deceased donor or a cadaver.
  • Autograft. When you use an autograft, you are using bone from inside your own body.

Why Would You Need A Bone Graft?

Bone grafting is done for many reasons. These include:

  • Used to fix bones that were damaged from trauma or even surgery
  • Growing bone around dental implants (and other implants)
  • Filling in an area where the bone is missing to provide more stability
  • Helps to fuse two bones together

Why Would You Need Emergency Bone Grafts?

That being said, there are times when bone grafting needs to be done in an emergency situation. These include:

  • In surgery: A surgical procedure may require a bone graft due to the amount of damage that your dentist or surgeon finds once you are asleep.
  • Trauma: If you are in an accident or a fight, you might have significant damage to your jaw and teeth. If you lose several of your teeth, a bone graft may be necessary to stabilize your jaw to make it stronger again.

How Is This New Procedure Done?

Though you may only need local anesthesia, there are times when general anesthesia is used for bone grafts. An incision will need to be made so that your dentist can see the bone that needs the graft. Over the next few months, your body will replace the graft with your own bone, so that the area becomes much stronger.

If you are having oral surgery, you may already be under anesthesia and your dentist will place the graft where it is needed, without having to do another procedure.
