What Are Clear Aligners?

And How Do They Differ From Braces?

Clear aligners are an orthodontic alternative to traditional metal braces that don't require uncomfortable brackets and wires. Our East Brunswick dental office uses SureSmile®. SureSmile uses a series of clear, smooth, removable aligner trays to gently guide your teeth into proper alignment. So why do patients choose clear aligners over braces? They are:

Removable

Patients can eat what they want without dietary restrictions because you simply remove the aligners before eating.

Easy

With clear aligners like SureSmile and Invisalign, you don't have to worry about brushing around wires or brackets, making them easy to maintain.

Discreet

SureSmile aligners are clear and discreet. They are practically unnoticeable, and many people will not know you are wearing them.
The Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

With Clear Aligners

Orthodontic treatments like clear aligners offer a variety of benefits, including:

Better Health

Misaligned teeth are not just an aesthetic issue. Crooked teeth can make it difficult to brush and floss properly. This can put you at an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease. By correcting your orthodontic concerns, you can practice better hygiene for improved oral health.

Beautiful Smile

A beautiful smile is just as important as a healthy smile. Some patients report feeling self-conscious about their misaligned teeth. Treatment using clear aligners allows patients to enjoy a beautifully straightened smile without the obvious metal wires and brackets used with braces.

Reduced Pain

A misaligned bite can not only cause oral health concerns but also jaw pain. Misaligned teeth can put stress on the temporomandibular joints (TMJs), which can lead to jaw pain, headaches, and more.

Which Issues Can

Aligners Address?

SureSmile aligners can address a variety of mild to moderate orthodontic issues, such as

Crooked Teeth

Gapped Teeth

Overcrowding

Crossbite

Underbite

Overbite

Open Bite

How Clear Aligners Work

"The atmosphere and staff at Trinity Dental Services was outstanding. It was our first experience with a pediatric dentist and I couldn't be more pleased.  The staff, from the reception area through to check out seem to be trained in handling children in kind and helpful ways like movies to watch while they wait."

Treatment Timeline

for Clear Aligners

1. Consultation

During your consultation at our dental practice in East Brunswick, NJ, your dentist will examine your mouth and discuss your goals to determine if clear aligners are the right treatment for you.

SureSmile is a clear aligner system just like Invisalign. It uses discreet aligners to straighten your smile.

2. Impressions

Your dentist will take digital scan of your mouth to craft your custom aligners.

3. Begin Treatment

Once your aligners are ready, you will begin your treatment. The first set of aligners is worn for about two to four weeks before you switch to the next set in the series. These aligners must be worn for at least 20-22 hours a day. Your dentist will provide you with all the instructions you need.

4. Checkups

You will visit our practice every four to six weeks so your dentist can monitor your progress.

5. Treatment Complete

Patient using SureSmile aligners can complete their treatment in as little as 12 months. However, this may vary based on the severity of your orthodontic issues. On average, treatment lasts about 12-18 months.

6. Retainer

Once your clear aligner treatment is complete, you will be given a retainer to wear at night. This will help keep your smile straight for years to come. Our practice offers Vivera™ retainers.

Maintaining Your Aligners and Smile

During Treatment

Taking care of your aligners and teeth throughout treatment is easy.

Remove Aligners to Eat

Remove your aligners before you eat. Be sure to place them in a protective case to prevent damage or loss. Be sure to rinse your trays before putting them back in your mouth.

Clean Aligners Daily

Use a mild soap and a soft-bristled brush to clean your aligners. Use cool or warm water because hot water can warp and damage your trays.

Brush Teeth Normally

Be sure to floss once a day and brush your teeth at least twice a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush for at least two minutes.

Q. What's the difference between SureSmile and Invisalign?
A. SureSmile and Invisalign are simply brands of clear aligners. Typically, SureSmile is more affordable than Invisalign, which is one reason we offer it at our East Brunswick practice. Both brands are tried and trusted by dentists and orthodontists.
