Catch Problems Early

Preventative Dentistry in East Brunswick, NJ

Nearly every expensive dental problem started as an inexpensive one. A cavity caught on an X-ray is a small filling. The same cavity two years later is a root canal and a crown.

Preventative dentistry is the unglamorous work that keeps you out of the second scenario. At Trinity Dental Services we have been doing it for East Brunswick families since 2010. Call (732) 613-1125 or book a checkup.

What a Preventative Visit Includes

Professional Cleaning

Brushing and flossing remove plaque. They do not remove tartar, which is plaque that has hardened onto the tooth and can only be taken off with instruments. Tartar sits along the gumline and below it, holding bacteria against the tissue — which is how gum disease starts. A cleaning removes tartar above and below the gumline, polishes the tooth surfaces, and gives us a clear view of everything for the examination.

Above and below the gumline

Comprehensive Examination

Dr. Youstina Mantias checks every tooth for decay, cracks, and wear, examines existing fillings and crowns for failing margins, assesses your gums and the bone supporting your teeth, and looks at how your bite comes together. Wear patterns often reveal grinding before the patient is aware of it — see night guards.

Digital X-rays

X-rays show what an examination cannot: decay between teeth, infection at the root tip, bone levels, impacted teeth, and cysts. Digital sensors use substantially less radiation than the film systems they replaced and produce an image immediately.

Oral Cancer Screening

Part of every routine exam. We examine the soft tissues of the mouth, tongue, floor of the mouth, and throat for anything unusual. Early detection makes an enormous difference to outcomes, and the screening takes a couple of minutes. Tell us about any sore, lump, patch, or area of numbness that has not resolved within two weeks.

Fluoride and Sealants

Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps reverse very early decay. Sealants are thin protective coatings placed in the deep grooves of back teeth, where a toothbrush bristle physically cannot reach. Both are especially useful for children and for adults at higher decay risk. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publishes evidence on the effectiveness of sealants in preventing decay in permanent molars.

Gums

Gum Health

Gum disease is common, largely painless in its early stages, and the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Because it does not hurt, most people do not know they have it.

Warning signs: bleeding when you brush or floss, persistent bad breath, gums that look red or puffy, gums receding from the teeth, or teeth that feel slightly loose.

Gingivitis, the early stage, is inflammation of the gum tissue and is generally reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. Periodontitis is the advanced stage, where the bone supporting the teeth is lost. Bone loss is not reversible, though the disease can be stabilised and managed. This is why catching it early genuinely matters.

We assess your gums at every visit and will tell you honestly where you stand.

Frequency

How Often Should You Come In?

Every six months suits most people. Some need more frequent visits — patients with a history of gum disease, high decay rates, dry mouth from medication, diabetes, or those who smoke.

We will tell you what applies to you rather than applying the same interval to everyone. Looking for care for the whole household? See family dentistry.

Cost and Insurance

Costs and Insurance

Most dental plans cover preventative care at a higher rate than other treatment — often fully — because insurers know prevention costs them less than restoration.

Insurance We Accept

We accept Delta Dental, MetLife, Cigna, Guardian, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Aetna, and verify your coverage before your visit.

FAQ

Preventative Dentistry Questions

Every six months works for most patients. More frequent visits are recommended for people with a history of gum disease, high decay rates, dry mouth, diabetes, or who smoke. We advise on the right interval for each patient individually.

A routine cleaning is not usually painful, though it can feel uncomfortable if your gums are inflamed. Tell us if you have sensitive areas and we will adjust our approach.

Modern digital dental X-rays use a very low dose of radiation, substantially less than the film systems they replaced. We take them only when clinically indicated, and protective measures are used. Tell us if you are or may be pregnant.

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue and is generally reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. Periodontitis is the advanced stage, in which the bone supporting the teeth is lost. That bone loss is not reversible, though the condition can be stabilised and managed.

Sealants are most commonly placed on children’s permanent molars, but adults at higher decay risk with deep unrestored grooves can benefit too. We will advise based on your teeth.

Yes, at every routine examination. We check the soft tissues of the mouth, tongue, floor of the mouth, and throat. Report any sore, lump, patch, or numb area that has not resolved within two weeks.

Yes. Brushing cannot reach the surfaces between teeth, which is where a large share of decay and gum disease begins. Floss, interdental brushes, or a water flosser all work — the important thing is cleaning between the teeth daily.

Most plans cover preventative care at a higher rate than other treatment, frequently in full. We verify your coverage beforehand. For uninsured patients, our in-office plan includes two cleanings, exams, and X-rays for a yearly fee.
