Gentle, Same-Day Care

Tooth Extraction in East Brunswick, NJ

Nobody wants to lose a tooth. We would rather save yours, and most of the time we can. But when a tooth is fractured below the gumline, decayed past the point of restoration, or infected in a way that threatens the bone around it, removing it is what protects everything else.

If you are in pain right now, call (732) 613-1125. We offer same-day appointments and welcome walk-ins.

Indications

When Extraction Is the Right Call

Decay Too Extensive to Restore

When there is not enough sound structure left to hold a restoration. Dr. Mantias will always look for a way to keep a tooth first — root canal therapy, a crown, or a filling rescues many teeth that look hopeless.

A Fracture Below the Gumline

Where a crown cannot get a seal, the restoration fails and the tooth is lost anyway — usually after more time and expense.

Advanced Gum Disease

When the bone supporting the tooth has been destroyed, there is nothing left to hold it in place.

Infection That Has Not Resolved

An infection that persists after root canal treatment sometimes leaves extraction as the reliable option.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Third molars causing pain, crowding, or repeated infection.

Baby Teeth and Crowding

A baby tooth that has not shed and is blocking an adult tooth, or a tooth that must come out to allow orthodontic treatment. We will explain what we see on the X-ray and what your options are, including doing nothing and monitoring it. You make the decision.

Two Approaches

Simple and Surgical Extractions

Simple Extraction

For a tooth that is fully erupted and accessible. The area is numbed, the tooth is loosened, and it is lifted out. Most patients are surprised by how quickly it is over and how little they feel — pressure, but not pain.

Fully erupted, accessible teeth

Surgical Extraction

For teeth that are broken at the gumline, impacted, or have curved or fused roots. A small incision gives access to the tooth, which may be sectioned into pieces for easier removal. Stitches are sometimes placed afterward.

Wisdom Teeth

Third molars frequently fall into the surgical category. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons provides patient information on impacted third molars.

The Appointment

What Happens During Your Appointment

1. Examination and X-rays

We assess the tooth, its roots, and the surrounding bone, and check the position of nerves and sinuses before planning anything.

2. Numbing

Local anaesthetic is placed and we wait until you are fully numb. Tell us if you feel anything sharp — we will add more.

3. Removal

You will feel firm pressure and hear some sounds. Neither means pain. If anything hurts, raise a hand and we stop.

4. Closing the Site

We clean the socket, place gauze, and add stitches where they help healing. You leave with written aftercare instructions and a number to call.

Next Steps

Replacing the Tooth

An empty space does not stay empty for long. Neighbouring teeth drift, the opposing tooth over-erupts, and the bone that held the root begins to resorb once it is no longer stimulated by chewing. We can discuss replacement at the same visit as the extraction, so you leave with a plan rather than just a gap. Implant consultations are complimentary.

Dental Implant

A dental implant replaces the root as well as the crown and does not involve altering neighbouring teeth.

Complimentary implant consultations

Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is a fixed replacement anchored to the teeth either side.

Partial Denture

A partial denture is removable, and often the most economical route.

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the exception. They are not usually replaced.

Cost and Insurance

Costs and Insurance

Extraction cost depends on whether it is simple or surgical, the tooth involved, and what your plan covers. Extractions are generally classed as a basic or oral surgery procedure and most plans contribute.

Insurance We Accept

We accept Delta Dental, MetLife, Cigna, Guardian, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Aetna, and verify coverage before treatment.

Coverage verified before treatment

FAQ

Tooth Extraction Questions

The area is fully numbed beforehand, so you should feel firm pressure but not pain. If you feel anything sharp during the procedure, tell us and we will add more anaesthetic. Soreness afterward is normal and manageable with the pain relief we recommend.

Most patients feel substantially better within three to four days, with soft tissue closing over roughly one to two weeks. Surgical extractions and wisdom teeth generally take longer than simple extractions. Bone continues remodelling underneath for several months.

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot protecting the extraction site is dislodged or fails to form, exposing bone. It typically presents as sharply worsening pain around day three to five, often with a bad taste. Avoid it by not rinsing, spitting, smoking, or using a straw for the first 24 hours. It is straightforward to treat, so call us rather than waiting it out.

Stick to soft, cool foods for the first day, and avoid chewing on the extraction side. Do not use a straw. Reintroduce firmer foods gradually as comfort allows over the following days.

Usually yes, except for wisdom teeth. When a tooth is missing, neighbouring teeth drift, the opposing tooth can over-erupt, and the bone that supported the root gradually resorbs. Dental implants, bridges, and partial dentures are the main replacement options.

We offer same-day appointments and welcome walk-ins during opening hours. Call (732) 613-1125.

We assess wisdom teeth and remove many of them in-office. Complex impactions are referred to an oral surgeon when that is the safer route, and we will tell you clearly which category yours falls into.

With local anaesthetic alone, most patients can drive themselves home. If any form of sedation is used, you will need someone to drive you and stay with you afterward. We will confirm this when your appointment is planned.

In Pain? Don’t Wait It Out

An infected or fractured tooth does not improve on its own, and the longer it is left, the more complicated the treatment tends to become.
